Getting Used to a New Hearing Aid - Special Helpline: Freephone 0800 034 0294

Becoming accustomed to a new hearing aid is a gradual process that demands time and patience. Several appointments with a hearing aid audiologist may be required to "fine tune" your new hearing aid so it works best for you. Most hearing aid audiologists will be able to advise specific programmes over the first few weeks to hone your listening technique.

Allow sufficient time to get used both to the feel of wearing the new hearing aid and the new sounds it will enable you to hear. This may need perseverance. Start off in quiet situations in your home environment; when you feel comfortable using your aid in this environment, gradually try out other situations such as having a conversation, having a group conversation, using the telephone and listening to the radio or TV. As your confidence increases, try out your new hearing aid somewhere busy like a restaurant or on public transport.
