Hearing Aids for Children

Special Helpline: Freephone 0800 034 0294

Hearing is essential for the development of speech, language and learning in a child. The earlier a child with hearing impairment is diagnosed and assistance given, the less serious will be the eventual effect on their communication skills. Even a child as young as one month old can benefit from hearing aids.

Since very young children are unable to adjust a hearing aid themselves, parents or carers in conjunction with audiologists should choose one that is easily monitored. It's best to get one that can be adjusted as the child's hearing develops and his hearing needs change. For this reason too, behind-the-ear aids are normally recommended for a child as the earmould can be removed and cleaned, or replaced as the child grows. They have added benefits in so far as they are simple to handle and check, are hard-wearing and can be allied to a telecoil and other listening devices.
